For a college education to actually have the intended influence on the individual and society as an entire, it needs to be reasonably priced – or utterly free. The result’s the “soaring college costs” we hear so much about today. According to the College Board in 1992 one yr of college at a public four-year institution value around $7,500 in today’s dollars. Private nonprofits price around $17,000 in 1992; right now the cost is almost $24,000. College prices have risen faster than the inflation fee for decades.

We must encourage accreditors to concentrate on student outcomes, increase the bar for quality, and promote transparency. Accreditors should offer new levels of transparency and high quality assurance based on outcomes—not simply inputs. We must encourage establishments to enhance their efficiency by recognizing and rewarding faculties with sturdy scholar outcomes, especially with the neediest college students, and incentivizing underperforming faculties to enhance. All establishments and methods must do more to control costs and innovate to make levels more affordable, and focus on their success rate with college students who have traditionally been least prone to full their programs and levels.
